Seattle Mother Arrested on Suspicion Of Murder After Allegedly Beating Son To Death Over Chores

A mother from Seattle has been taken into custody on suspicion of murder following the tragic death of her 14-year-old son. The 29-year-old woman called 911 around 2:15 p.m. Thursday from their residence near 4000 14th Ave South, reporting that her son had become unresponsive during a disciplinary session.

According to a police report, the mother admitted to spanking her son with an extension cord and stated that her anger stemmed from his failure to complete his chores. She reportedly told him it was “butt cutting time” before instructing him to remove his clothing and using the cord to strike him.

The report claims that the mother pushed her son against a wall, causing him to hit his head, after which he went limp and fell to the floor. She allegedly continued to strike him while he was down, insisting he stand up, which he did. The report notes that she continued the beating for approximately an hour until he became unresponsive.

During a bail hearing last Friday afternoon, the woman opted not to appear in court. A public defender argued for her release, but Judge Klinge ruled in favor of the prosecution’s request for a $3 million bail. Although the woman has not yet been formally charged, prosecutors expected that to occur by Tuesday. Local news outlets have chosen not to disclose her name pending the charges.

Corporal punishment, which involves physical discipline such as spanking or hitting, can have significant psychological effects on children. Research consistently indicates that such practices can lead to a range of negative outcomes, including increased aggression toward peers and siblings, negatively impact a child’s self-worth and self-esteem, mental health problems, damage the trust and bond between a parent and child, cognitive development and academic achievement.
